Officer Apart of the Victims in Shooting at Planned Parenthood in Colorado
A shooting spree happened yesterday, November 27th 2015,inside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs that left three dead and nine others injured. The shoot out consisted of a five-hour standoff after a shooter opened fire in a busy parking lot, then entered the Planned Parenthood clinic.
One of the victims, identified as Garrett Swasey, 44, is a police officer at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.Reportedly, he was one of the first on the scene – and volunteered to go. Swasey is a six-year veteran, a father of two young children and a former competitive ice dancer.
According to The Boston Globe, Swasey was a Melrose, Massachusetts native who moved to Colorado in the late '80s to pursue his passion for figure skating.
As a member of the campus police force, he was not required to respond to the shooting, but those who knew him said it was in his nature to volunteer.
"He responded out of a sense of duty to the Colorado Springs community, as a state-sworn police officer," Colorado Springs Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Catherine Buckley told the Globe.
Even the pastor of the local church, Scott Dontanville said his sense of duty superceded whatever personal feelings he had regarding Planned Parenthood.
"He may not agree with the abortion position, but he was willing to lay down his life for other people," he said.
