Though Fast and Furious 7 seemed like an obvious, but tragic way to bring the franchise to a close, there was no way Universal Pictures was going to walk away from a franchise that was still bringing in over $350 million. So, Vin Diesel did what he does: he announced a new Fast and Furious trilogy last year that would end the franchise for good (and by “for good” we mean for a few years until they reboot it with a new cast). Fast and Furious 8 had already been scheduled for a April 14, 2017 release, but now Universal Pictures has given those last two Fast and Furious movies release dates as well.

According to the studio Fast and Furious 9 will open in theaters on April 19, 2019 while Fast and Furious 10 will follow on April 2, 2021.

While little to nothing is known about those films, we do know that F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) will direct Fast and Furious 8, replacing James Wan who left the franchise to direct Aquaman for Warner Bros. The studio had been trying to convince Justin Lin, who directed four Fast movies from Tokyo Drift through Fast and Furious 6, to return for the final two installments, which they hoped to film at the same time.

Diesel has continuously teased the locations for Fast and Furious 8 saying New York City, Iceland and Cuba were all locations for the upcoming sequel.

In addition to the sequels, Universal is hot on expanding the Fast and Furious Cinematic Universe (FFCU?) with spinoffs based around some of the more popular characters. While no specific character has been announced, it’s hard to believe that the studio wouldn’t want a Hobbs movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, or an action-comedy starring Tyrese and Ludacris.

At the very least the Fast and Furious franchise is set for the next five years, though surely Universal has plans for this property for a long, long time to come.
