A Central New York animal shelter is asking the community for support after reaching full capacity and struggling to keep up with the number of pets needing care. Staff say adoptions have slowed, surrender requests are rising, and there are almost no foster homes available. The situation has become overwhelming for the people working every day to protect animals who have nowhere else to go.

The Reality Inside The Shelter

The Herkimer County Humane Society shelter is currently caring for nearly 100 animals with a waiting list for additional intakes. Each day brings more calls from owners who can no longer keep their pets, and many shelters across the region are facing the same shortage of space.

The organization says the need is urgent and ongoing. They are asking for adopters, foster families, and donations to help care for the animals in their building.

They also encourage everyone to spay and neuter their pets and to keep pets safely secured to prevent additional surrender situations.

A Job Filled With Heartbreak And Hope

Animal care workers describe long days without real time off. They show up every morning, including holidays, often working eight to nine hours or more. Then they go home, hold their own pets, and prepare to do it all again the next day.

They describe comforting scared dogs that shake after being abandoned and watching surrendered animals shut down because their world changed overnight. The emotional strain is heavy, and staff say they often face anger from people they cannot help immediately.

The Call For Compassion And Patience

The shelter is asking for understanding from the community. If a call goes unanswered, it is not a lack of concern. It is because workers are feeding, cleaning, and caring for the animals that are already there. They ask people to be respectful and patient during this crisis.

How You Can Help

Donations make it possible for the shelter to provide food, medical care, and comfort for the animals living there. If you're interesting in adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating, visit https://www.herkimerhumanesociety.org/.
