While many families are looking forward to Fourth of July fireworks in Utica, our four-legged friends may not be nearly as excited.

Those loud booms and bright flashes that make us say "ooh" and "ahh" can cause serious anxiety for dogs. In fact, veterinarians say fireworks are one of the biggest causes of stress and panic in pets.

Why Are Dogs So Afraid of Fireworks?

Unlike people, dogs don't understand why loud explosions are suddenly happening. To them, the unexpected noises can signal danger.

Veterinarians say fireworks trigger a dog's fight-or-flight response, and the fear can actually get worse over time. Even dogs that seemed fine when they were younger may become more anxious with each passing year.

Signs Your Dog Is Stressed by Fireworks

Every dog reacts differently, but some common signs include:

  • Shaking or shivering
  • Hiding under beds or furniture
  • Excessive barking or howling
  • Pacing
  • Heavy panting
  • Clinginess
  • Accidents in the house
  • Destructive behavior
  • Lip licking or frequent yawning

If your pet isn't acting like themself, it's probably trying to tell you something.

How to Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks

Veterinarians recommend making your home as peaceful as possible before the fireworks begin.

Some ways to help include:

  • Keep your dog indoors.
  • Close curtains and blinds.
  • Turn on a fan, television or white noise machine to drown out the sound.
  • Create a cozy "safe space" with favorite toys and blankets.
  • Stay calm and reassure your pet.
  • Be patient if they bark or have an accident.
  • Consider anxiety wraps like a ThunderShirt.
  • Talk to your veterinarian about calming supplements or CBD products before trying them.

One of the biggest tips? Make sure your dog is wearing a collar with updated tags. Frightened pets sometimes bolt when startled by fireworks.

How Do Fireworks Get Their Colors?

Besides being a fun fact to impress your friends during the finale, knowing what makes fireworks work is a reminder of just how intertwined our daily lives are with Earth’s natural resources. Some of these minerals are considered critical commodities, meaning they’re vital to modern life and can be difficult to source.
So the next time you see a shimmering white sparkle or a deep red bloom over the Mohawk River, you’ll know: there's real science, and some pretty rare elements behind all that beauty.
It all comes down to chemistry. When fireworks are launched, metallic compounds, also called mineral elements, are heated to really hot temperatures. And as they burn, they emit specific colors of light.
The more complex the mix, the more dazzling the display.
