It was over a year ago that the massive Sony hack revealed plans for a Jump Street-Men in Black crossover movie, and while it wasn’t entirely clear, we sort of assumed this would happen in 23 Jump Street. Interesting? Sure. Exciting? Well, maybe. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller busy prepping the young Han Solo movie, we’ve retained some healthy skepticism about this wacky crossover plan. But it looks like Sony has found a director to renew our optimism.

Variety reports that The Muppets director James Bobin is in talks to helm the Jump Street and Men in Black crossover, though the official title of the film has not yet been revealed and plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. So we could be looking at a full-fledged team-up film, or maybe just 23 Jump Street with an expanded MIB cameo.

Speaking of which, while Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will reprise their Jump Street roles for the sequel / crossover event, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not return to their roles as Agent J and Agent K (can you even imagine Jones agreeing to this?). As we learned during the hack, Sony will find new, younger actors to play the Men in Black leads, with plans to use the crossover film to reboot the franchise.

Jump Street scribe Rodney Rothman will pen the screenplay for the crossover, with Lord and Miller producing. Bobin is best known for directing Flight of the Conchords and The Muppets, and recently helmed Alice Through the Looking Glass for Disney.

The Jump Street-Men in Black crossover does not yet have a release date, but with Gambit recently yanked from Fox’s film schedule and its fate uncertain, it looks like Tatum has a bit of time to commit to these shenanigans.
