Kristen Stewart Covers NYLON, Rejects Sexual Orientation Labels
Gay? Straight? It's all good with Kristen Stewart, just as long as you don't pressure her to subscribe to either label.
In an interview with NYLON, for which Stewart covers the upcoming September issue, the actress addresses rumors that she's been dating Alicia Cargile, a visual effects producer ("Google me, I'm not hiding," she insists). Still, Stewart isn't ready to identify as any single thing, and counts herself among a growing number of proponents of sexual fluidity.
"If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it," she says. "But I am an actress, man. I live in the f---ing ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’"
"I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight," she adds. "It’s like, just do your thing."
Still, her craft doesn't come without its challenges, she says, and though she's earned praise for her myriad roles since 2008's Twilight, she still feels the stress of doing films justice.
"I’m always f---ing terrified before every role,” she says. “Even if it’s fun and stupid or whatever. American Ultra is a stoner comedy, but it was physically strenuous, and to try and tell such an absurd story but keep it grounded so people will believe it is really hard."
And the challenges of stardom seem to come once the cameras are down, too.
"I really wish I could not be f---ing recognizable,” she tells the magazine. “It’s so annoying. I f---ing hate people looking at me when all I want to do is look back at them."
