Last year, New York State legalized the use of recreational marijuana. Does that mean you can light it up at the New York State Fair in Syracuse? Yes.

During the New York State Fair in 2021, anywhere tobacco use was permitted, adult use of marijuana was also permitted.

“State law allows marijuana use anywhere tobacco use is permitted," Dave Bullard said in a statement. "Smoking is not permitted in Fairgrounds buildings or in the open concert venues at Chevy Court and Chevy Park but is allowed elsewhere outdoors. We encourage those who smoke to be considerate of others around them.”

There will be six designated outdoor smoking areas set up and their exact locations will be posted online once they've been determined. Marijuana products, just like tobacco products, are not sold at the Fairgrounds during the run of the Fair.

Interim fair director Sean Hennessey told CNY Central that security is going to make sure everyone who chooses to smoke pot follows the rules.

The fair runs from August 24th through September 5th and tickets can be purchased at nysfair.ny.gov.

Adult-use marijuana is now legal in New York State, but what happens when a minor gets caught with cannabis? According to the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act adults aged 21 and older are legally permitted to use marijuana in New York. The state is very specific about underage cannabis use,

Adults 21 years of age or older will be allowed to buy and possess up to three ounces of cannabis flower and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis (oils, tincture, edibles, vapes, etc.). You will be able to buy cannabis only at a state licensed dispensary. You must present a valid ID proving you’re 21 or older. Cannabis at home should be stored securely and kept away from individuals under 21.
