A Kangaroo in Yates County was returned to its owner 24 hours after it was reported missing.

The missing young female “joey” was captured by a Yates County Sheriff’s Deputy on March 14th. The young kangaroo was reported missing Saturday, March 13th at approximately noon near Coates Road and Williams Hill Road in Scottsville New York.

The owner is Stokoe Farms of Scottsville, New York. The female Joey’s name is Kaia. The farm is known best for its Christmas tree farm and pumpkin patch, and of course it’s camels and kangaroos.

Can You Legally Own A Kangaroo In New York State?

After first hearing that a farm owned a Kangaroo, we started diving into a rabbit hole of New York pet rules. So, are you legally allowed to own a kangaroo in New York State?

According to The Spruce Pets, New York law states you are not allowed to own any wild animal:

New York law states you are not allowed to own any wild animal, including non-domestic felines or canines, bears, crocodiles, venomous reptiles, and primates. Animals that you can keep as pets without a permit include sugar gliders, wallabies, kangaroos, capybaras, porcupines, and most non-venomous reptiles.”

So unless you run a zoo, chances are you’re not going to have a kangaroo hopping around anytime soon.

There Are States In America Where You Can Own A Kangaroo

No joke, there are ten states that require a permit to own a kangaroo, and three states that allow ownership without a permit.

States Allowed To Own A Kangaroo As A Pet- You would need a permit for Idaho, Nevada, Illinois, Maine, Ohio, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, or Washington.

States Allowed To Own A Kangaroo Without A Permit- You can legally own a Kangaroo without a permit in Wisconsin, South Carolina, or West Virginia.
