Pharrell Williams Shares New Song ‘Runnin,’ From the ‘Hidden Figures’ Soundtrack
Pharrell Williams has offered his composing talents to several major films including The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the Despicable Me franchise. The 43-year-old producer recently provided music for the upcoming flick, Hidden Figures.
On Monday (Oct. 24), Pharrell shared his new song “Runnin’,” which will appear on the soundtrack to the movie. The song has a throwback vibe to it without sounding dated. On the track, Pharrell recalls his childhood growing up in Virginia.
"Summertime in Virginia was a oven (oven) / All the kids eating ice cream with their cousins (cousins) / I was studyin' while you was playing the dozens (dozens) / Don't act like you was there when you wasn't," he rap-sings.
Elsewhere in the song, Pharrell conveys that when it comes to achieving your dreams don't reach for the moon - reach for Mars. "I know they say you crawl for your own / But in my mind I already jog / If I stand still I cannot get far / They want the Moon, I'm on Mars," he sings on the chorus.
Stars and outer space have a lot to do with the movie Hidden Figures. The film retells the story of African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Henson) and her two colleagues, Dorothy Vaughan (played by Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (played by Janelle Monae), who helped NASA catch up in the Space Race with their ingenious mathematical calculations.
Hidden Figures is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 25 in limited release before opening wide on Jan. 6, 2017.
