The alarming reality is that poisonings happen fast. In 2024 alone, the poison center managed over 44,000 exposure cases—with nearly 70% happening by accident. While some incidents were minor, others led to serious medical emergencies.
Cannabis Edibles: A Growing Threat for Kids
While cannabis-related calls have declined slightly, young children remain at risk. Many cases involve gummy candies, chocolates, and other edibles that look just like regular snacks. Many cases involved products that were left in easy-to-reach places. Experts recommend locking cannabis, medications, and household chemicals in a safe storage area.

But, poison center calls aren’t just about toddlers getting into household cleaners. In 2024:
- 13% of cases involved suspected suicides.
- Medication mix-ups, chemical exposures, and overdoses made up a large portion of calls.
- 68% of cases were resolved at home, preventing unnecessary ER visits.
What to Do in a Poison Emergency
If you suspect poisoning:
- Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately. Poison experts are available 24/7 for FREE.
- Have the product nearby to describe ingredients.
- If someone is unconscious, not breathing, or having a seizure, call 911 immediately.
