An Oneida couple were struck and killed by a freight train in Verona on Sunday in what appears to be a horrific suicide, according to New York State Police.

The couple has been identified as Earl Myatt and Mary Myatt, both 59. Police say they were reported missing earlier in the day after Earl Myatt phoned his son to apologize and say ''he was sorry for what he was about to do'', a release from state police said.

Mary Myatt ''was of diminished mental and physical capacity due to a brain aneurism for which she was recovering at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility'', the release states.

Police found a suicide note inside the Myatt's vehicle parked near the scene.

The investigation into the incident continues, police said.
