Texting Catcher Technology May Come To Upstate NY Roads
Saying that texting while driving is as dangerous as being drunk behind the wheel, some New York lawmakers want the latest cutting-edge technology to be put into place. It's known as a breathalyzer for distracted drivers, and it can determine if a driver was texting at the time of an accident.
New stats show that more accidents are now being caused by distracted drivers than by drunk drivers. The timesunion.com reports that the technology to determine if someone had been texting could be ready this year. It would then have to be field tested. Currently, police must use a search warrant to determine if a driver had been texting, and the exact time is not always accurate.
Texting while driving is illegal in New York State, and tougher penalties for those caught were put into place in 2014.
