The sun may be shining in Central New York, but for many the lights and electronics are off.

The National Grid website reports wide-spread power outages in both the City of Utica, New Hartford and New York Mills. The total number is somewhere above 5,000 and crews are working to correct the problem.

Below is the list and numbers of those without power.

New Hartford (Town) - 2,279
New Hartford (Village) - 1,116
New York Mills (Village) - 442
Utica - 1,621

The main portion of Utica without is reported to be close to New Hartford in South Utica. There is no word yet on what caused the outage, but crews believe to have it back up and running by later this afternoon. We will keep you updated.

Power Outage Preparation:

*Keep your cell phone charged and make sure you know where your backup power supply is.
*Make sure all your flashlights have fresh batteries.
*Fill your gas tank. You can use your car to keep warm and recharge devices.
*Have some food available that you don’t need to cook.
