Have you ever heard of a sandwich called a Mickey? My grandmother used to make them for me when I came to Utica on summer vacation.

What in the world is a Mickey? Despite what you may be thinking, a Mickey isn't a sandwich that's cut into the shape of the famous Disney mouse. It's also not a cheese sandwich even though that would make sense since mice love that stuff.

Quite simply, a Mickey is a BLT with peanut butter. The core ingredients are bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and peanut butter. It may sound like a crazy combination, but don't knock it until you've tried it.

I never did ask my grandmother how the sandwich got its name but something just dawned on me: "I wonder if it's named after New York Yankee great Mickey Mantle." I bet he loved BLT's with peanut butter. Hang on let me google: "Mickey Mantle loved peanut butter."

OK that was futile, I can't find anything about Mantle liking bacon or peanut butter. Maybe you have some answers. Have you ever heard of or tried a Mickey? If so did it originate in Central New York? Could it be one of my grandmother's originals?
