Florida's Interstate 4 can no longer lay claim to being the lowest numbered interstate in the country. That distinction now belongs to Interstate 2, which runs through the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas. Interstate 2 signage was unveiled today at a ceremony in Harlingen.

The highway was officially designated by the AASHTO and the FHA (the bodies that approves interstate numbering) in May and the work began on installing the sign soon after.

Why Interstate 2? Even numbered interstates run east-west with the lowest numbers in the southern tier of states and the numbers get higher the further north you go.
