Oneida County is considering adding a surcharge for those of us who use cell phones in the county.  If it is passed by the Board of Legislators, it would add 30 cents to our monthly bills.  The new law would then take effect at the beginning of next year.

According to a blog posted by the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce at chamber.org, the money generated by the surcharge would be used to support the county's 9-1-1 operation.  A new state law has allowed the county to add the surcharge once a public hearing is held, as reported at romesentinel.com.

The state already charges a 9-1-1 surcharge of $1.20 per month.  The Oneida County surcharge would be in addition to that.
