Do you cover up the built-in webcam on your laptop? If you don't, according to the Director of the FBI, you should.

According to IFL Science, earlier this year, FBI Director James Comey stirred up some controversy when he said publicly that he covers the webcam of his personal computer with tape.

Comey came under fire for the comments because he had previously said that people shouldn't try to make their electronics unhackable as this undermines national security efforts.

But in an interview this week, Comey defended his stance and added that all citizens should be covering their webcams if they want to protect their privacy.

When asked if he still covers his camera, Comey said “heck yeah, oh, heck yeah," before adding, “it's not crazy that the FBI director cares about personal security as well,” and that “people ought to take responsibility for their own safety and security.”

Comey explained that “there are some sensible things you ought to be doing, and that's one of them. If you go into any government office, we all have our little camera things that sit on top of the screen, they all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so people who don't have authority don't look at you,” he said.

The FBI chief then called for to work on their "security hygiene" and be a little more cautious of their electronic devices, meaning that we should take these matters into our own hands and not make the assumption that manufacturers hold our private security as important as we do.

So there you have it, from the Director of the FBI himself. If you have a webcam on your laptop, tablet or computer, you should probably start getting in the practice of putting a piece of tape over your camera lens.

Do you cover your webcam lens already? If not, will you start now?
