Even though Chemung County is a little out of our listening area, the city’s Emergency Management Office is reporting a tornado came through Elmira yesterday (Thursday) after 4pm causing significant damage.

New York State Electric and Gas has reported 16,740 customers without power in Chemung County. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo declared a state of emergency for the City of Elmira.

A state of emergency enables New York to mobilize state resources to assist local governments more effectively and quickly, and if necessary gives the Governor the authority to suspend statutes, rules and regulations that would impede response and recovery activities. The declaration further gives the Governor the ability to direct state resources to local governments in need. The declaration applies to Chemung County and contiguous areas.”

The storms caused widespread power outages, damage to homes, and damaged and downed thousands of trees. Check out some of these pictures thanks to our friends at Wink 106 on Facebook.
