Hit Song Has Central New York Ties
If you're a Lite 98.7 listener, you're no doubt aware of the Chainsmokers, who've had hits of their own and collaborated with other big artists, like Chris Martin and Coldplay.
Turns out the Chainsmokers have quite a Central New York connection. The band's lead singer, Andrew Taggart (pictured above on the right) is a Syracuse University graduate. He was on the hill from 2008-2012 and says some of his SU experiences influenced the lyrics on "Closer," the Grammy-nominated #1 hit they recorded with Halsey. Here are some of the lyrics:
So baby pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover,
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of the mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain’t ever getting older
Taggart, whose family was not rich when he was growing up, says he used to see some of the Syracuse students from wealthier families rolling around campus in Mercedes and Range Rovers and other expensive rides. The image got stuck in his head.
The Chainsmokers and Taggart rocked the annual SU Block Party in 2016 and they're returning to Upstate New York for a show October 12th at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo.
