If you're currently teaching your teenager to drive or you remember the whole ordeal, you know how nerve-raking and rewarding the experience can be.

As an aid to parents, financial services website WalletHub has studied teenaged drivers in the U.S., "using a collection of 23 key metrics, from number of teen driver fatalities to average cost of car repairs to presence of impaired-driving laws." Their goal was to provide financial information for parents, and ensure peace of mind and safety for all. New York performed extremely well.

The Empire State finished #2 overall and was #1 in the Safety category, with relatively low numbers of teens texting while driving, teen crashes and fatalities. New York teens also obeyed seat belts laws better than their peers in other states.

New York also notched top-20 ranks in Economic Environment (taking into account costs for repairs and insurance premiums) and the friendliness of state Driving Laws.

Maryland was #1 overall and Wyoming finished at the bottom of this study.
