Today is Monday, October 14th, 2013. It's Columbus Day, a federal holiday. Most likely the public and parochial schools your child attends will be closed. You can expect that Federal, county and many municipal government offices will be closed today.

There is no regular mail delivery from the USPS although, express mail will be delivered. Why? Because today is Columbus Day and according to the Providence Journal:

On Columbus Day we celebrate both the discovery of America and the discoverer of America, the explorer Christopher Columbus (born in the Republic of Genoa, in today’s northwestern Italy), who sailed from Portugal in 1492 with ships paid for by the queen of Spain. The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria found the West Indies when they thought they’d found the East Indies.

Americans of all stripes, whether they pause to thank their ancestors for coming here or not, will enjoy parades and feasting on this special day.

The biggest Columbus Day parade in our great state of New York will be in New York City today, so, if you're in the area, enjoy. Whatever you'll do to celebrate today, be safe.
