If you're already hearing "I'm bored" from the kids this summer, there's a little-known membership perk that could save families money and open the door to dozens of day trips.
The North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) program gives members access to more than 1,400 museums, science centers, gardens and cultural attractions across the United States, Canada, Bermuda, Mexico and the Cayman Islands.
And several destinations in Central New York are part of the network.
How the NARM Program Works
You don't join NARM directly. Instead, you purchase a qualifying membership through a participating museum or cultural institution. Then, that membership gives you reciprocal benefits at other NARM locations. And there are so MANY to choose from!

Benefits often include free admission, discounts in gift shops and savings on special events. Most memberships cover two people in a household, while family memberships may include children. Since each institution has its own rules, it's a good idea to check before visiting.
Central New York Museums That Participate in NARM
Families in the Mohawk Valley have several participating destinations nearby, including:
- Munson in Utica
- Kirkland Art Center in Clinton
- Oneida Community Mansion House in Oneida
- Fenimore Art Museum and Fenimore Farm & Country Village in Cooperstown
- Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse
- Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse
- Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) in Syracuse
- Onondaga Historical Association in Syracuse
- Matilda Joslyn Gage Center in Fayetteville
- Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith
Why Parents May Want to Consider It This Summer
Summer break can get expensive, especially when you're trying to keep the kids entertained. A NARM membership can turn museums and science centers into affordable day trips throughout the year.

Whether it's exploring art in Utica, hands-on exhibits in Syracuse or taking a trip to Cooperstown or beyond, families can visit as many participating locations as they want. There are no limits on the number of museums you can visit or how many times you can go.
Before You Go, Check for Restrictions
Some museums have restrictions on special exhibits or events, and a few locations limit reciprocal benefits for members who live within 15 miles of the museum.
Because each institution sets its own policies, NARM recommends contacting the museum you plan to visit before heading out.

For parents looking for something different to do this summer without spending a fortune, a museum membership could end up paying for itself after just a few visits.
