Congratulations, yogurt. You are now New York's official State Snack. Yogurt joins a lofty pantheon of Empire State symbols including the beaver (state mammal), sea scorpion (state fossil) and apple muffin (state muffin) as exemplifying the best of New York.

Yogurt does indeed deserve its place among the official state symbols as New York is the nation's top yogurt producer and fueling the explosive growth of Greek-style yogurt.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the legislation today (October 15, 2014) which made the designation official. Oh sure, some may say that lawmakers have more pressing concerns than selecting the official state snack, but here in the Empire State, remember to always be thinking Excelsior (state motto - ever upward)!
