Potential Propane Price Gouging in CNY
With the recent cold snap, it's no surprise that our utility bills are going to be a little high this month. But you should take an extra look at your heating bill to make sure it's not more than it should be.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has issued a consumer alert to warn residents about possible price gouging on propane delivery. Schneiderman also mentioned that some people have reported delays in their propane delivery.
No New Yorkers should have to freeze in this weather, and my office is looking into cases of unacceptable delivery delays and potential price gouging. (AG Press Release)
The Attorney General is asking New Yorkers to contact his office immediately if you suspect that you may be a victim of these practices. The AG's hotline is 518-776-2000 or you can file a complaint through the AG's website. Schneiderman also urged residents to review all their options for home heating. If you must choose heating oil or propane, there are lots of things to consider, such as delivery fees, minimum purchase requirements and the fact that prices can vary greatly between suppliers over the course of heating season. Make sure you completely understand your contract to help prevent being taken advantage of. NYSERDA also offers energy saving tips to help you save money all year long.
The good news? It will be Spring in about 70 days.
