UPDATED: Tornado Touches Down in Elmira – Trees Uprooted and Roofs Gone in Southern Tier
A doppler indicated tornado has stuck the Southern Tier city of Elmira. Reports are coming in via Twitter of significant damage.
The storm, not yet a confirmed tornado, uprooted trees, blew off roofs and have apparently trapped some people in vehicles.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo confirms via Twitter, "Reports of significant damage in Elmira, possible tornadic activity, state assessment crews on the way"
Damage has been reported at Elmira County Club
Downtown Elmria may have taken a direct hit.
Chemung County officials are calling today's storm 'a tornado.'
5:20pm: First reports of damage in Binghamton from the same cell, trees and powerlines down.
6:15pm: State of emergency is in effect.
