Unvaccinated? The CDC Says Don’t Do This Over Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day weekend is right around the corner, and with the long weekend comes many different ways that people celebrate. Some get together for "end of summer" festivities and some treat it like it's just another day of the year. The CDC wants everyone to stay safe, so they're making some recommendations of how to do so.
If you are not vaccinated, the CDC suggests that you shouldn't do what many normally choose to do over the long weekend.
"First and foremost, if you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling," Walensky said at a White House COVID-19 briefing on Tuesday.
Holiday weekends (such as Labor Day) are a concern for health officials, because the traveling typically causes the increase in the spread of the virus.
White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said that ahead of Labor Day weekend, "it's critical that being vaccinated is part of their pre-holiday checklist."
The CDC recommends that you take the following precautions if you are not fully vaccinated and are using the weekend to travel within New York State and beyond:
- Get tested 1-3 days before travel
- Get tested 3-5 days after travel and self-quarantine for 7 days. Self-quarantine for 10 days if you don't get tested
- Self-monitor for symptoms
- Wear a mask and take other precautions during travel
New York's new cases hit 4,126 as of September 1 - making the new 7-day average 4,849. Total, the state has seen approximately 2.3 million cases and 53,903 deaths.
