How would you feel if you took your son or daughter to visit Santa Claus at Sangertown Square and he turned out to be a girl?  A number of years ago I was working at a radio station in Kingston. It was Christmas time in New York’s first Capital city and the children were smiling from ear to ear. At the Hudson Valley Mall Santa had a certain glow in his eyes, a peculiar high pitch to his laugh, and a beard that occasionally slipped off revealing a beautiful complexion.

My co-worker’s daughter was very excited about meeting Santa. This was her first year to sit on the big fella’s lap and she waited in line for almost an hour before getting her chance to meet the jolly ole elf. When she approached, Santa leaned over to hand this cheerful little child a candy cane and his/her hat accidentally slipped off.  Santette had her hair carefully tucked in a bun but that all changed after her bobby pins fell out and her long locks came flowing down to her shoulders.

Ultimately it’s not a big deal to me whether Santa is a male or a female but what gets me thinking is the scenario that this little girl's Santa hopes may have been dashed forever. The story made national news when it happened and my co-worker even earned an interview on the TV Show Extra.
