Those lighted readerboard signs can really help businesses promote their latest sale or a new item on their menu. But the ones we found aren't even trying...

There's just something so great about a clever message left on those light-up business signs. Whether it's a restaurant poking fun at another eatery, or a place using some self-deprecating humor to draw attention to their establishment, it usually works. Even if it doesn't get you in the door, you remember that place and you remember their creativeness.

Unfortunately, if you do have a business and a message board that you use, you only have a few options. You can try to take the clever route, but be warned, if you don't use just the right amount of wit, it could fall flat and end up doing more bad than good. You can also take the traditional route and just put up specials and sales and just inform. This works great if you don't want to take the risk of making a bad joke. BUT, it's not as noticeable and your sign won't stand out.

And now, recently discovered... There's a third option (okay, it's not really "recently discovered," but we just started noticing this last option). You can just... Not-really-try. We're not saying these businesses gave up when it came to putting messages on their light-up boards, but maybe some of them did. Or maybe some realized that this brought more attention to their place. Either way, we enjoyed seeing these signs in the Utica area. Take a look for yourself:

-It can be found in the back of the building (instead of by the road), and it really doesn't say anything that makes it stand out.

Yes, these signs may not be clever, but they're not generic sale and promotion signs either. Somehow they fall into their own category and whether they mean to or not, it has made their place stand out.
