This year marks the 100th anniversary of the planting of the cherry blossoms that bloom each spring around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C.  Orginally a gift from the mayor of Tokyo, Japan, the blossoms have come to represent the friendship between the United States and Japan.

The city of Washington hosts the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.  Due to the warm weather this last winter and spring, the blossoms arrived early, but we were still able to find these trees in bloom at Potomac Park south of the National Mall.
