Cuomo Points To Parents For Piercings
Albany, NY (WIBX) – New York teens who want body piercings without their parents knowing may be making a mad rush to piercing parlors. In just about three months a new law signed by Governor Cuomo goes into effect that mandates parental consent for body piercings for anyone under the age of 18.
Crediting New York State Senator Joseph Robach and Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz with crafting the legislation, Gov. Cuomo thanked the men saying, “…(i)t is our obligation as New Yorkers and parents to make sure that our teens are taking every precaution to remain healthy and safe.”
Piercings, if not cared for properly, can easily become infected and cause other health problems. In addition to scarring, the legislators also pointed to allergic reactions that are increasingly common as body piercing becomes more commonplace.
Piercing studios will be required to keep records of signed permission forms on file for a year.
New York is now the thirty-second state in the United States to ban body piercing without the consent of parents or guardians.
