Demi Lovato’s mom, Dianna De La Garza, recently opened up about her daughter's breakup with Wilmer Valderrama, revealing that their 2016 split nearly "broke" their family.

While appearing on Millennial Hollywood with Dakota T. Jones on Thursday (April 12), the Texan memoirist revealed that even though she wasn't the biggest fan of the former That '70s Show star at first, she eventually warmed up to him—so much so that when they broke up, it devastated her.

“I [wanted] this time with my daughter, and now I’ve gotta share it with [Valderrama],” De La Garza explained of the time when Lovato and the actor began dating back in 2010, per People, adding that she didn't want them "to be together" in the beginning.

Thankfully, as De La Garza recounted, she eventually came around to Valderrama's charms ("He’s so likable and just a lovely human being!"). And when she thought that the two "were gonna get married,"  she decided to get to know him better.

“We had all hung out, but I hadn’t really made that effort. And once I made that effort, I really came to really truly love him as a person — and as a person that I really wanted to be in our family,” she explained.

Sadly, the couple wasn't meant to last. After they broke things off in June 2016, Lovato's family was "so upset" over the unexpected breakup.

“I think Demi came to a point where she wanted to make some decisions in her life, and when that happened, it just really broke us all," De La Garza shared, adding, "[Valderrama] was just so gracious and caring, and he still is to this day. I believe he loves her, and she loves him."

Meanwhile, the singer's mom thinks there may still be hope for her daughter and Valderrama. In March, De La Garza told Access Hollywood that "I would be happy if they were together forever," adding, "they’re amazing friends and hopefully one day it will be more than that."
