It's a really devastating condition - hydrocephalus, also known as water on the brain. It can happen at birth, or at any age. It can cause brain damage, and if untreated can even be fatal. It may be rare, but the outcome takes an extreme toll on the patient as well as the whole family.

Elyse is a precious little girl from Central New York who has been going through this ordeal for quite awhile. She's 7 years old and has had 8 emergency brain surgeries, two of them just 4 days apart. There is currently no cure for hydrocephalus, and the only treatment is brain surgery to insert a shunt. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the goal of the shunt is to move the excess cerebrospinal fluid from around the brain to other places in the body where it can drain and be absorbed. However, the shunts have a high rate of failure, and there are many complications that can happen with these devices. This is why Elyse and other patients have to spend so much time in hospitals.

Raymour & Flanigan in Yorkville has partnered with the REaCH Organization, which is doing incredible work to try to find a cure. They know the importance of trying to improve the quality of life for these youngsters, and there will be a special fundraising event at the store this weekend where you can show your support.
