The bridge that carries Interstate 5 over the Skagit River in Northern Washington has collapsed. There were vehicles that fell into the river.

The Washington State Patrol says the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River at Mount Vernon has collapsed, dumping vehicles and people into the water.

Trooper Mark Francis said the four-lane bridge collapsed about 7 p.m.

The Mt Vernon Bridge Collapse is the most significant highway infrastruture failure in Washington State since the 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows bridge, known as the "Galloping Gertie"

Mount Vernon is located north of Seattle. I-5 is the major north-south highway along the Pacific coast stretching from the Canadian border to the Mexican border near San Diego.

Location of bridge between Mount Vernon and Burlington, WA

A detour around the segment of collapsed bridge would be to take College Way to the Riverside Drive/Burlington Boulevard bridge just east of Interstate 5 and re-enter the highway at George Hopper Drive.
