If you've never looked up towards the top of the Hotel Utica, the sides that front Lafayette and Seneca Streets have a secret.

There is an interesting architectural feature called grotesques, meaning carved stone images in buildings. If they are used as a water spout, then their technical name is a gargoyle.

There are other buildings in Utica that have these grotesques and gargoyes.
