British teen singer Birdy has been opening eyes with her original material and covers of indie tunes. PopCrush is proud to present an exclusive video of the 15-year-old performing the xx’s ‘Shelter’ at a recent show in Los Angeles.

The original recording by indie pop group the xx was sparse, focusing on the vocals with only occasional guitar and drum accents. Birdy retains the quiet vibe of the song while turning it into a piano ballad. She taps into the true emotion in the words when she sings, “I find shelter in this way / Under cover, hide away / Can you hear when I say? / I have never felt this way / Maybe I had said something that was wrong / Can I make it better with the lights turned on?

‘Shelter’ appears on Birdy’s self-titled debut album, which also includes the self-penned track ‘Without a Word‘ and cover versions of Bon Iver‘s ‘Skinny Love,’ James Taylor’s ‘Fire and Rain,’ Phoenix’s ’1901′ and the Postal Service’s ‘The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.’

Birdy has performed on ‘Conan’ and ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ and her song ‘Just a Game’ is featured on the soundtrack for ‘The Hunger Games.’ She’s currently recording her second album, which will be composed entirely of original songs. Check out the voice that has critics and fans swooning with this exclusive performance video.
