Our friend Dawn wrote to us recently, asking if we had covered the topic of peeling license plates (in her words "these miserable disintegrating NYS license plates") and expressing concern.

"Are WE responsible for these?" she asked. "Can we get ticketed?" Good questions, Dawn. We're sure you're not the only one who has experienced this. In fact, the picture in this post shows a severely delaminated plate that Beth is turning back in to New York State.

Motorists ARE responsible for replacing these "miserable" plates. New York covers the cost of peeling plates, but not bent or damaged plates. Here's the full page on the matter from New York State's Department of Motor Vehicles.

You can request new plates over the phone at 1-518-402-4838, 8:00AM-4:00PM Monday-Friday, or in person at a DMV office. Just make sure you have a photograph of the damaged plate. If you'd like to keep your old license plate number, you'll be charged $20.

You should not be ticketed for delaminated plates, but just get 'em replaced.
