I must admit, when I moved to Nashville, I experienced a bit of a culture shock. If you're considering a move or a visit to a warmer climate, you may need to know these facts first.

 Why Are People Wearing Jackets?

Once the temperature drops below 75, it's time to invade the winter clothing closet. Us New Yorkers are accustomed to wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts well into early fall. Folks in the south start wearing earmuffs the day after the 4th of July. OK, I'm exaggerating a little bit, but I thought it was kind of humorous to see people dressed in layers on a 60 degree day.

3 Snow Flurries = State of Emergency

I'm not joking when I tell you that southerners have been known to abandon their cars on the side of the road at the first sign of slightly negative weather conditions. One winter, Nashville received almost 2 inches of snow. All the schools closed, and the supermarkets were ransacked. Forget trying to find a gallon of milk, most residents had them hidden in their snowfall out shelters.

Type A Personalities Are Nowhere to Be Found

If you have a driven and fast paced temperament, you may find yourself getting a little frustrated at the laid back lifestyle of southerners. When I used to get my morning coffee at the convenience store, I wondered why the cashier and customer were carrying on a conversation about seemingly nothing. I just wanted to get my java, and get out of there; meanwhile they're chatting forever about their solution to eliminating the chiggers once and for all.

Southerners Talk Different

You already knew folks from the south have a different way of communicating, but there are a couple of words that took me a long while to get used to; One afternoon, a couple of co-workers and I went to the supermarket to buy some stuff for a surprise office party we were having. When one them asked me to grab a buggy, I had no idea what they were referring to. Were we living in the 1800's? I certainly didn't see any horses outside...no buggies either for that matter. No matter the time of day, there's a good chance you'll never enjoy a good dinner in south. However, you may really like eating your supper. Oh, remember the next time you’re over watching a game at your friend's house, don't ask him or her for the remote control. They may not have a clue what you're referring to. However, if you ask for the clicker...yeah that's their language.
